IRISH MUSIC FANS of a certain vintage will fondly remember McGonagle’s on South Anne Street in Dublin, a venue which hosted bands like U2 in their infancy.
The original building was demolished – but now 22 South Anne Street is going back to its roots with the opening of a new theatre, hidden behind a bright blue door.
Named Magistorium, the venue is bringing the concept of ‘dinner and a show’ to Dublin, with themed nights centred around traditional music, jazz, and 1920s New York.
Launching on November 3, it will open three days a week:
- On Thursdays, there is Ceol, an evening devoted to trad music which will see gigs from artists like John Spillane, De Dannan, and Donal Lunny;
- On Saturdays, Café Society, set in 1920s New York;
- And on Sundays, the Jazz Roast, a cabaret/speakeasy style show with brunch or a full roast dinner.
You can choose to see the show on its own (tickets range from €18 to €30) or have a slap up meal along with it (priced from €35 to €65) – the menu is made up of Irish classics, like bacon and cabbage, gur cake, and Clare salmon.
The first gig with trad band Stockton’s Wing is happening on November 3 – you can find the full list of upcoming acts and buy tickets here.
